Rural infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir received a significant push on Tuesday, 27 April, as the Centre approved road projects worth ₹3,566 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)-IV, aimed at improving connectivity across remote regions.
The sanction letter for projects approved under the PMGSY-IV (Batch-II) was handed over by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan to J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at a programme held in Srinagar.
The projects under PMGSY focuses on connecting unserved habitations and strengthening rural road networks to improve access to essential services and economic opportunities.
Alongside the road approvals, a Mother Sanction of over ₹4,568.23 crore was also released under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) for 24 States and Union Territories, targeting women Self-Help Groups.
Highlighting the scale of support, the Union Minister said that road projects worth nearly ₹8,000 crore have been approved for Jammu & Kashmir within a single year, marking a major expansion in rural connectivity efforts in the region.
He assured that as construction progresses on the sanctioned roads, the Central Government will continue to take positive decisions on the remaining required routes.
The minister emphasised that the objective is not merely road construction but connecting every village, habitation, and remote settlement to the mainstream of development, as roads bring schools, hospitals, markets, and opportunities closer to people.
