The Maan-Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 project in Pune has entered its final stage, with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) setting a target to open the 12 metro stations in the first phase for passengers by May 2026.
According to PMRDA, the 23.2 Km metro corridor has seen significant progress, with 94.20 per cent of the overall project work already completed. The development marks a key milestone in improving connectivity between the city’s major IT hub in Hinjawadi and central Pune.
PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari recently conducted an on-ground inspection of the entire corridor. The review focused on assessing the quality of construction and identifying any technical challenges that may impact the project timeline.
“By May 2026, our target is to complete the first phase with 12 stations. With that in mind, we’ve conducted on-site inspections of all stations and given instructions to speed up the work. PMRDA will provide all necessary cooperation promptly for this project,” Chaudhary was quoted as saying in a statement by PMRDA.
Following the inspection, contractors have been directed to accelerate the pace of work to ensure that the May 2026 deadline for the first phase is achieved. The authority has also assured that all necessary support will be provided to facilitate timely completion.
In terms of system readiness, signalling trials and safety inspections, including those by RDSO and CMRS, have already been completed.
Once operational, the metro line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Shivajinagar and Hinjawadi, offering faster and more reliable transit for daily commuters.
Notably, Metro Line 3 is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, making it the first metro project in the country to adopt this approach.
