Mumbai’s Sion railway overbridge reconstruction work targeted for completion by 15 July, BMC reviews progress

The reconstruction of the Sion railway overbridge, which connects the eastern and western parts of Sion, is expected to be completed by 15 July 2026, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

In a statement, the Mumbai civic body said that BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the project site and reviewed the progress of the project’s sub-activities.

During the inspection, Bangar said the works on the Sion bridge were progressing at the expected pace.

He directed officials to adhere to the prescribed deadline and asked the civic administration to maintain close coordination with the railway administration and traffic police.

He also instructed officials to carry out proper and detailed planning and to deploy additional manpower and machinery.

The BMC said all works on the western side of the Sion bridge have been planned for completion by 31 May 2026, and works are underway in line with that schedule.

Within the railway limits, the girder on the northern side is to be launched by 30 April 2026, while the girder on the southern side is to be launched by 31 May 2026.

After that, work on the eastern-side approach road will begin.

The statement said this work will be completed depending on available dry weather during the monsoon.

According to the current planning, the bridge work is expected to be completed by 15 July 2026.

Bangar said timely and planned completion of girder fabrication is essential for completing the project within the prescribed deadline.

The railway department should take necessary prompt and coordinated actions to ensure that all parts of the girder are available at the worksite on time, instructed Bangar.

Those present during the inspection included BMC Chief Engineer (Bridges) Rajesh Mule, Executive Engineer Namdev Ravkale, Central Railway Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction) Arpan Kumar, Executive Engineer Satishan, and other concerned engineers.
