Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday, 24 March, reviewed the evolving security situation in West Asia and its implications for India’s defence preparedness, with a focus on operational readiness, supply chains and long-term planning.
The review meeting, held in New Delhi, was attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, Defence Secretary, Secretary (Defence Production) and Chairman of DRDO.
The discussions covered the global and regional security scenario, including the potential impact of further escalation in ongoing conflicts on India’s strategic environment.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the assessment also examined the effect of geopolitical developments on supply chain management related to procurement and production of defence equipment, including maintenance and serviceability of existing platforms.
The ministry said that Singh “was briefed about the global and regional security scenario, the impact of a possible escalation of the ongoing conflicts on India as well as the challenges and opportunities presented by the current geopolitical situation”.
“The impact of the situation on the supply chain management towards procurement and production of defence equipment, including maintenance and serviceability of existing equipment, was also examined,” the ministry added.
The Defence Minister directed that operational and technological lessons from the ongoing conflicts be studied continuously to strengthen India’s preparedness.
“We need to formalise a comprehensive integrated roadmap for the next decade factoring in the lessons learnt, challenges and opportunities going forward whilst ensuring Aatmanirbharta and operational readiness across all fronts,” he said.
The review comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, with concerns over potential spillover effects on global supply chains and defence logistics.
The US-Israeli join military campaign against Iran began on 28 February, with initial strikes killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and prompting Iranian counterstrikes across the region.
Iran has since launched missiles and drones targeting Israel, US military bases in Gulf states, and energy infrastructure, while effectively blocking the Strait of Hormuz through which a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass.
