The Ministry of Defence has signed a capital acquisition contract worth around ₹1,950 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of two Mountain Radars for the Indian Air Force.

The agreement, signed in New Delhi on Tuesday, 31 March, includes associated equipment and required infrastructure for the deployment of the radar systems.

The contract has been awarded under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category, reinforcing the government’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing.

The Mountain Radar system has been designed and developed by the Electronics & Radar Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and will be manufactured by BEL.

The deployment and commissioning of these radars are expected to enhance India’s air defence capabilities, particularly in challenging mountainous terrains, while strengthening overall national security.

The procurement is also aimed at reducing dependence on foreign-origin defence equipment and promoting domestic defence production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives.
