₹858 crore defence contracts inked to enhance India’s air defence shield, enable in-country maintenance of P-8I aircraft

The Ministry of Defence on Friday, 27 March, signed contracts worth ₹858 crore for the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems and depot-level inspection of P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

The contracts were inked at Kartavya Bhawan-2, New Delhi.

Of the total, a ₹445 crore contract has been signed with JSC Rosoboronexport, Russia, for the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems for the Indian Army.

These systems are designed to enhance India’s multi-layered air defence capabilities against aerial threats including aircraft, drones and cruise missiles.

The agreement is also expected to further strengthen the Indo-Russian strategic defence partnership.

Separately, a ₹413 crore contract has been signed with Boeing India Defense Private Ltd for the depot-level inspection of P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft of the Indian Navy.

The contract falls under the Buy Indian category with 100 per cent indigenous content and will enable in-country maintenance through domestic Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facilities, in line with Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
