The groundbreaking ceremony of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam was conducted on Tuesday, 28 April.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the ceremony in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and other officials.

The project, with an estimated investment of $15 billion over five years (2026-2030), will include a 1 GW hyperscale AI data centre, Google said.

The facility is being developed in partnership with Adani ConneX and Airtel Nxtra.

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated around 600 acres of land in Turluvada, Rambilli and Adavivaram areas for the project.

The AI hub will comprise a gigawatt-scale infrastructure with three data centre campuses and associated connectivity systems, aimed at enabling large-scale AI and cloud services.

The project also includes expansion of fibre-optic connectivity under a broader network initiative and the development of associated infrastructure to support low-latency digital services and large-scale data processing.

In a statement on Tuesday, Google said the hub will be supported by additional digital infrastructure such as subsea cable connectivity linking global data routes, strengthening India’s integration with international networks.

During the event, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is poised to emerge as a major trusted value chain and supply chain partner in electronic manufacturing.

He noted that India has already emerged as a leader in IT services and is advancing in electronics manufacturing, with mobile phones becoming one of the country’s top export items.

Nearly 50% of domestic electronic demand is now being met through local production.

The minister also said that under the Semiconductor Mission, commercial production has already begun in India.

The project is part of a broader investment plan to build an AI ecosystem in India, with infrastructure aimed at supporting digital services and large-scale AI deployment.

Google Cloud Chief Executive Thomas Kurian said, “Today’s groundbreaking is a powerful realization of our shared vision with the Indian government, and an inflection point for the country’s AI-native future. Together we are laying the foundation for Viksit Bharat, and opening new doors for economic opportunity nationwide. The Google AI hub will serve as a catalyst for growth built on deep community partnerships.”
