New Delhi, June 30: General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, on Tuesday, 30 June, took charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after more than four decades of service.

General Seth, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. His career spans nearly four decades across operational command, strategic planning, capability development and institutional leadership.

Over the years, he has commanded formations in several key operational environments. Before taking over as Army chief, General Seth commanded both South Western Command and Southern Command. The Ministry of Defence said this gave him the rare distinction of commanding two operational Army Commands and overseeing critical theatres for more than two-and-a-half years.

General Seth has also worked in key strategic and staff appointments at Army Headquarters, particularly in areas linked to force modernisation, capability planning and long-term force structuring. His work has been linked to aligning the Army’s operational needs with emerging technologies and future battlefield requirements.

He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, and has also attended the Command and Staff Course in Paris.
