India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded 4.9% growth in April 2026, driven by a 6.2% rise in the manufacturing sector, according to the first press release of the new IIP series with 2022-23 as the base year.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has revised the base year of the All India IIP from 2011-12 to 2022-23 to make the index more representative of the current structure of India’s industrial sector.

The revised series includes an updated item basket, new weighting structure and broader sectoral coverage to reflect recent changes in industrial activity across the economy, the ministry said in its release on Monday, 1 June.

The quick estimate of IIP for April 2026 stood at 118.9, compared with 113.1 in April 2025.

Among the four sectors under the new series, mining and quarrying contracted by 5.1%, while manufacturing grew 6.2%. Electricity and gas supply grew 4.9%, and water supply, sewerage and waste management grew 6.6%.

The index for mining and quarrying stood at 104.6 in April 2026, while manufacturing stood at 119.3. Electricity and gas supply recorded an index of 125.5, and water supply, sewerage and waste management stood at 146.1.

Within manufacturing, 17 out of 23 industry groups at the NIC 2-digit level recorded positive growth in April 2026 over April 2025.

The top three positive contributors were manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, which grew 12.7%; manufacture of electrical equipment, which grew 19.2%; and manufacture of machinery and equipment, which grew 12.9%.

In the motor vehicles group, auto components, spares and accessories, passenger cars and rims contributed significantly to growth.

In electrical equipment, switching and circuit protection equipment, carbon-based electrical articles and small transformers contributed to the rise. In machinery and equipment, fire-fighting equipment, cranes and stationary internal combustion piston engines were among the major contributors.

As per use-based classification, the index for primary goods stood at 112.2, capital goods at 132.1, intermediate goods at 119.7 and infrastructure/construction goods at 129.7 in April 2026.

Consumer durables recorded an index of 119.1, while consumer non-durables stood at 112.4.

Capital goods recorded the highest use-based growth at 16% in April 2026 over April 2025. Intermediate goods grew 7.7%, infrastructure/construction goods grew 7.1%, consumer durables grew 4.3%, consumer non-durables grew 2.8% and primary goods grew 0.8%.

The new IIP series has expanded the scope of industrial coverage by including gas supply, water supply, sewerage and waste management activities, while retaining mining, manufacturing and electricity.

The item basket has also been revised to include 1,042 products mapped to 463 item groups, compared with 839 items mapped to 407 item groups in the 2011-12 series.

New items added to the basket include cards with magnetic stripe, CCTV cameras, non-woven textile articles, parts of aircraft and spacecraft, stents and vaccines other than veterinary vaccines. Items such as kerosene, fluorescent tubes, CFLs, bicycle and rickshaw tyre tubes, LMV tyre tubes, printing machinery and sewing machines have been removed.

The manufacturing weight in the new series is 76.062%, compared with 77.633% in the earlier series. Mining and quarrying has a weight of 11.053%, electricity and gas supply 10.865%, and water supply, sewerage and waste management 2.020%.

MoSPI said the new series also provides greater granularity by giving separate indices for electricity generation from renewable and non-renewable sources, and for fuel minerals, metallic minerals and non-metallic minerals.

The ministry said the next IIP release, covering May 2026, will be issued on Monday, 29 June 2026.
