Kolkata Metro Railway’s Noapara Carshed at Dum Dum has undergone major refurbishment and infrastructure modernisation to improve train maintenance efficiency and working conditions for Metro operations.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Railways, the upgraded facility now has redeveloped inspection and maintenance bays, improved roofing, structural enhancement of the shed area, modernised interiors and redeveloped flooring with VDF and nano finish.
The ministry said the new flooring has been introduced for better durability and cleanliness inside the carshed, where Metro rakes are inspected, maintained and kept ready for operations.
The refurbishment also includes aesthetic improvements within the premises. Metal art sculptures and enhanced wall designs have been installed to give the facility a more organised and modern appearance.
“Metro Railway’s Noapara Carshed at Dum Dum, Kolkata has undergone extensive refurbishment and infrastructure modernisation aimed at improving maintenance efficiency and overall working conditions for Metro operations,” the Ministry of Railways said in its statement.
The work is significant because Noapara is Kolkata Metro’s oldest maintenance depot and remains one of its key facilities for the upkeep of Metro rakes.
Along with the Salt Lake and Joka depots, Noapara forms part of the maintenance infrastructure that supports Kolkata Metro’s daily operations.
Noapara also holds operational importance for Kolkata Metro’s expanding network.
The Noapara station and depot area serves the Blue Line and is linked with the Yellow Line corridor towards the airport side.
The depot is used for maintenance and storage of Metro rakes near the station area.
The modernisation of the carshed comes at a time when Kolkata Metro’s network has been expanding beyond the older north-south corridor.
The Yellow Line’s first phase between Noapara and Jai Hind, serving the airport side, received safety clearance in 2025 before opening for passenger services.
