Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday, 23 May, flagged off India’s first 300 Km Universal Rocket Launching System, ‘Suryastra’, during the inauguration of a new defence manufacturing complex in Maharashtra’s Shirdi.

The long-range rocket system was unveiled at the NIBE Group’s defence manufacturing facility in Ahilyanagar district, where Singh also laid the foundation stone for a missile complex linked to the project. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan were present at the event.

Suryastra is a universal multi-calibre rocket launcher system capable of striking targets at ranges between 150 Km and 300 Km.

The system recently underwent successful firing trials at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, where it demonstrated long-range precision strike capability.

Addressing the gathering, Singh said future wars would increasingly be decided by advanced military technologies, automation and precision-guided munitions rather than the size of armed forces alone.

He described indigenous defence manufacturing as critical for India’s strategic self-reliance and long-term security preparedness.

The rollout marks part fulfilment of a ₹293 crore emergency procurement order awarded earlier this year for the supply of Suryastra launcher systems to the Indian Army.

The launcher has been developed by Pune-based NIBE Ltd in collaboration with international technology partners as part of India’s broader push towards long-range strike capabilities.
