The government has awarded Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling projects at 16 toll plazas across six states and one UT as part of its push to digitise National Highway operations and introduce seamless toll collection, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed Parliament.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, 12 March, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Jairam Gadkari said the MLFF tolling system, which enables vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping, has been awarded at 16 National Highway toll plazas across the country.
“The Multi Lane Free Flow based on Barrier less Tolling has been awarded on16 toll plazas,” Gadkari said.
According to the reply, the projects cover toll plazas located in Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The system relies on gantry-mounted Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to deduct user fees through the existing FASTag ecosystem.

“The Government envisages to implement MLFF Tolling on all 4 Lane and above National Highways including in Tribal and Backward regions in a phased manner,” Gadkari said.

Cameras and RFID sensors mounted on overhead gantries identify vehicles and automatically deduct the applicable toll amount without requiring them to stop or slow down at toll plazas.
