CMRL awards ₹12.31 crore contract to rebuild bridge across Virugambakkam-Arumbakkam canal in Chennai

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded a contract to rebuild a bridge across the Virugambakkam-Arumbakkam Canal at Kaaliamman Kovil Street, a project intended to improve local connectivity and strengthen road infrastructure in the area.

The contract for the demolition and reconstruction of the bridge has been awarded to Thomas Iyadurai Infrastructure Private Limited at a value of ₹12.31 crore. The project is scheduled to be completed within 180 days.

According to CMRL, the scope of work includes the construction of a new wider bridge matching with the existing four lane road.

The upgraded bridge has been designed to support improved traffic movement, enhance road safety, and facilitate smoother connectivity between the surrounding residential and commercial areas, the CMRL said.

“Upon completion, the new bridge is expected to significantly improve accessibility and commuting convenience for the public, while also easing traffic flow in the locality,” the CMRL said.

The project is also expected to make daily commuting more convenient for people living and working in the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The contract agreement was signed in the presence of T. Archunan, Director (Projects), CMRL.

The agreement was signed between T. Livingstone Eliazer, Chief General Manager (PP&D), CMRL, and R. Thomas Iyadurai, Managing Director of Thomas Iyadurai Infrastructure Private Limited.

Senior officials of CMRL, including Chief General Managers Dr. D. Jebaselwin Gladson (CP&M) and Rekha Prakash (P&D), were also present during the signing ceremony.
