In a major development for Mizoram’s logistics and food distribution network, the first-ever Food Corporation of India (FCI) foodgrain cargo train reached Sairang Railway Station on 3 March 2026 carrying rice from Punjab.
The freight train consisted of 42 wagons transporting around 25,900 quintals of rice, marking an important milestone in strengthening rail-based supply chains for essential commodities in the northeastern state.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the successful unloading of the inward FCI food grain rake at Sairang signifies the growing operational capability of the station and highlights the expanding role of railway infrastructure in supporting Mizoram’s logistics and food distribution network.
The development follows the inauguration of the 51.38 Km Bairabi–Sairang railway line on 13 September 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The line brought Aizawl onto India’s railway map by linking the state directly with the national railway network.
Since the commissioning of the railway line, freight operations on the Bairabi–Sairang section have gathered momentum.
From April 2025 to March 2026, the Sairang terminal handled more than 30 freight rakes carrying a range of commodities.
During this period, cargo handled through the terminal included 3.5 rakes of cement, 2 rakes of automobiles, 0.5 rake of fertilisers, 20.5 rakes of stone chips and 4 rakes of sand.
The movement of such commodities indicates the gradual development of Sairang as an emerging freight hub supporting infrastructure development and the supply of essential goods in Mizoram.
Railway logistics in the state also witnessed another milestone in December 2025 when the first inward automobile rake carrying 119 passenger vehicles arrived at Sairang, demonstrating the line’s capability to handle high-value bulk consignments.
Indian Railways has also initiated steps to strengthen parcel logistics on the route, including the introduction of refrigerated parcel van services aimed at transporting horticultural and other perishable produce, which can help expand market access for farmers and traders in the region.
Rail connectivity has also begun supporting tourism growth in the state.
On 12 February 2026, the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train reached Sairang Railway Station for the first time under the “North East Discovery” circuit.
The train carried 81 tourists from across India as well as from countries such as the United States and Nepal, highlighting Mizoram’s rising visibility as a tourism destination.
Passenger demand for rail services from Sairang has also been strong. The Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express has recorded occupancy exceeding 150 per cent in both directions, while the Sairang–Guwahati Express and Sairang–Kolkata Express have reported occupancy levels above 100 per cent.
Further strengthening regional connectivity, a new train service between Sairang and Silchar was flagged off on 9 February 2026, improving access to the Barak Valley in Assam, an important educational, medical and commercial hub.
