Mumbai Metro Line 2B has crossed a major construction milestone with the successful launch of a 252-metric-tonne composite steel span over the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations.
In a statement on Sunday, 14 June, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said that the operation was completed between 1 am and 3 am on 14 June during a tightly planned two-hour railway block on the CSMT-Panvel section.
The 54.25-metre-long span comprises four composite steel girders and was erected over active railway infrastructure with close coordination between MMRDA and Central Railway authorities.
According to MMRDA, the span launch involved tandem lifting using two 500-metric-tonne hydraulic cranes, with a standby crane kept ready at the site.
The work was carried out by a dedicated team of 30 engineers and technical staff, supported by nearly 100 skilled and unskilled workers.
MMRDA said all statutory approvals and railway block permissions had been secured in advance before the operation was taken up.

“Between 1 AM and 3 AM on June 14, MMRDA successfully completed the launch of the first composite steel span over the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the CSMT-Panvel section. The 54.25-metre-long span, comprising four composite steel girders weighing a massive 252 metric tonnes, was erected within a tight two-hour railway block through meticulous planning and close coordination with Central Railway authorities,” the authority said.
“The operation involved tandem lifting using two 500 MT hydraulic cranes, backed by a standby crane, and was executed under stringent safety and quality protocols by a dedicated team of 30 engineers and technical staff, along with 100 skilled and unskilled personnel. All statutory approvals and block permissions were secured in advance,” the MMRDA added.
The MMRDA said the work involved precision fabrication, rigorous quality checks and strict safety protocols to ensure the span could be lifted and placed within the limited railway block window.
Metro Line 2B is part of Mumbai’s wider metro expansion plan and is aimed at improving east-west connectivity in the city.
