The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has said that ₹22,244 crore has been disbursed in subsidies under the flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for rooftop solar installations as on 26 May 2026.
The scheme is transforming ordinary homes into power producers, enabling lakhs of families to generate their own electricity and receive free power while contributing to India’s renewable energy goals.
In an official post on X, MNRE stated: “From homes turning into power producers to lakhs of families benefiting under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar adoption is gaining strong momentum across the country. With ₹22,244 crore subsidy disbursed as on 26 May 2026, India is moving steadily toward greater energy access, lower electricity costs, and wider solar participation.”
“From rooftops to a citizen movement – the solar story is growing, one home at a time,” the ministry added.
State-wise performance: Gujarat has emerged as the clear leader with ₹4,993 crore in subsidies disbursed, followed by Maharashtra at ₹4,224 crore and Uttar Pradesh at ₹3,539 crore.
The strong showing by these states reflects accelerating grassroots adoption of solar energy and effective implementation of the central scheme at the ground level.
The ₹75,000 crore PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households, providing central financial assistance to reduce the upfront cost of solar panels and batteries.
By promoting decentralised solar power generation, the programme is expected to ease the burden on the national grid, cut household electricity bills, and advance India’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
