The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced desilting work at five locations under all three packages of the Mithi River project ahead of the Monsoon.

Further, drain-cleaning works are underway across Mumbai city, as well as the Eastern and Western suburbs, the BMC said in a statement on Saturday, 4 April.

According to the Mumbai civic body, additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar visited and inspected ongoing desilting works at the Mithi River and several sites in the Eastern Suburbs today.

Chief Engineer (Storm Water Drains) Kalpana Raul, Deputy Chief Engineer Sanjay Ingle, along with concerned officers and engineers, were present during the inspection.

During the inspection, Bangar directed that the pace of desilting work under all three packages of the Mithi River, as well as in major and minor drains across Mumbai, should be accelerated.

He further instructed that information regarding the removed silt be made available on a dashboard accessible to citizens, allowing them to track when desilting work in their area is scheduled to begin and end.

The senior BMC official directed that desilting should be planned in a manner that ensures necessary action is taken regarding every flooding spot, effectively resolving the issue.

Daily work targets are to be set for each drain, with strict monitoring to ensure implementation.

As part of efforts to manage waste flow, the civic body has also directed installation of Trash Boom Systems wherever feasible to prevent floating waste in drains from entering the sea.

Further, officers are required to maintain personal supervision over the entire desilting process, and the presence of engineers at sites has been made mandatory during the desilting work.

Bangar issued instructions to ensure that if any malpractice is observed, stringent action will be taken against both the contractor and the concerned officers.
