Around 41,500 vehicles crossed the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling location on the first day of its implementation at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat-Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, according to a statement by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Saturday, 2 May.
The figure marks the first full day of operations following the launch of India’s first MLFF-based tolling system, which eliminates physical barriers and enables vehicles to pass through toll locations without stopping.
The MLFF system uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology along with FASTag-based electronic toll collection to enable automated and contactless tolling operations.
The system is designed to ensure seamless traffic movement while reducing congestion and travel time.
According to the statement, the barrier-less framework is expected to improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicular emissions by minimising stoppages at toll plazas.

It also reduces the need for manual intervention in toll operations.
To ensure smooth functioning, NHAI has urged users to maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts.
In cases of insufficient balance or invalid FASTags, an electronic notice will be issued, requiring payment within 72 hours.
Failure to comply within the stipulated period will attract a charge of twice the normal user fee of the vehicle category.
The MLFF system also allows users to access and pay electronic notices through the designated portal, with provisions to raise grievances within 72 hours.
Continued non-payment may lead to blacklisting of FASTag and restrictions on vehicle-related services through the VAHAN platform.
“The introduction of MLFF will help to strengthen toll operations by enhancing transparency and reducing operational costs of setting up toll plazas,” the ministry said.
MLFF will also contribute towards the development of a more robust, efficient and cost-effective tolling ecosystem across the National Highway network, it added.
