Indian Railways has approved a ₹106.29 crore project to strengthen the communication backbone in the Firozpur Division of Northern Railway through the deployment of high-capacity optical fibre infrastructure.
The project involves the provision of 2×48 Optical Fiber Cables (OFC) on each side of the track along 945 route kilometres in the division.
The upgrade is intended to improve the reliability and capacity of railway communication systems across the network.
“Indian Railways has approved the provision of 2×48 Optical Fiber Cables (OFC) on each side of the track for strengthening the communication backbone over Firozpur Division (945 RKm) of Northern Railway, at a cost of ₹106.29 crore,” the Railways said in a statement.
The project is part of a broader Indian Railways programme aimed at upgrading and replacing the communication backbone used for train operations and signalling across the network.
This umbrella programme was approved under the Indian Railways Works Programme 2024-25 with a total allocation of ₹4,871 crore under Plan Head (PH)-33, which covers investments in modernizing signalling systems, telecommunication equipment, and traffic control systems to improve safety and train handling capacity.
“The project forms part of the umbrella work for strengthening, repair and replacement of the communication backbone over Indian Railways, approved under the Works Programme 2024-25 with a total cost of ₹4,871 crore under Plan Head (PH)-33,” the Railways said.
Within this umbrella project, a sub-umbrella allocation of ₹871 crore has been approved for Northern Railway.
The Firozpur Division optical fibre project has been proposed under this allocation.
According to the statement, the project will further strengthen the communication infrastructure of Indian Railways and enhance the reliability and efficiency of railway communication systems across the network.
