India to strengthen chemical and nuclear crisis preparedness through new DRDO CBRN centre in Delhi

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday, 6 May, opened the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Field Training and Demonstration Centre at Burari plains in Delhi to strengthen India’s preparedness for radiological and nuclear emergencies.

The facility was inaugurated by Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, the centre has been established to enhance readiness for radiological and nuclear exigencies through specialised training, demonstrations and research-based response mechanisms.

The new training and demonstration centre has been developed as a DRDO-CBRN Centre of Excellence and includes multiple advanced facilities such as a dedicated radiological and nuclear test bed facility, heavy ion research facility, emergency medical response systems and real-time field response units.

The centre forms part of the upcoming CBRN Centre of Excellence under the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS).

It is intended to train personnel from the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority and other agencies involved in CBRN emergency preparedness and crisis response.

The Ministry stated that INMAS will conduct training programmes and workshops at the facility to prepare specialists for frontline response roles while introducing modern techniques and technologies related to CBRN preparedness.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Director General Soldier Support System Dr Upendra Kumar Singh, Director General (Production Coordination & Services Interaction) Dr Chandrika Kaushik, Director General Resource & Management Dr Ravindra Singh, corporate directors, scientists and other dignitaries.
