India has constructed 7,211 Km of National Highways till February 2026 in the current financial year, according to data shared by the government in the Rajya Sabha.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabah, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari stated that a total construction target of around 10,000 Km has been set for FY 2025-26.

Of this, 7,211 Km has already been completed, indicating steady progress in highway expansion across the country.

“The Government in the Ministry of Roads Transport & Highways has set a target of construction of National Highways (NHs) for about 10,000 km for the current Financial Year (FY) 2025-26, of which 7,211 km has been constructed till February 2026,” Gadkari stated.

In response to another question on the details of delayed projects and the primary reasons for such delays, the minister acknowledged that several projects have faced delays beyond their original completion timelines.

According to the minister, these delays are attributed to multiple factors, including land acquisition challenges, statutory clearances, utility shifting, encroachment removal, and law and order issues.

Additionally, financial stress affecting contractors and concessionaires, poor performance of contractor and concessionaire, has also impacted execution timelines.

External disruptions such as the Covid-19 pandemic and cloudburst events have also contributed to delays, according to the minister.
