The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has started mock drills at city underpasses as part of its flood preparedness measures ahead of the monsoon season.

The exercise is aimed at checking the operational readiness of pumping machinery, diesel generator sets and drainage infrastructure at key locations across Gurugram.

According to a statement by GMDA on Wednesday, 20 May, the mock drills began on Thursday, 14 May, and several major underpasses have already been covered.

The authority said the objective is to ensure that systems are functioning at optimum capacity for storm water management during heavy rainfall.

During the drills, water was released into the sump wells of the underpasses and the installed pumping machinery was activated to assess discharge efficiency, response time and overall operational performance.

Diesel generator sets and related electrical systems were also tested to ensure uninterrupted functioning during emergency situations and power outages.

Drainage infrastructure at the sites was inspected to check smooth storm water flow and overall preparedness.

At Signature Tower Underpass, 8 pumps of 20 HP capacity each were tested and found to be working satisfactorily.

At HUDA City Centre Underpass, 4 pumps of 7.5 HP capacity each were inspected and found functioning satisfactorily.

At Ambience Underpass, 4 pumps of 20 HP capacity were found operational, while 2 pumps of 25 HP capacity at Vatika Underpass were also found operational during the exercise.

At Sikanderpur Underpass, 4 pumps of 25 HP capacity each were checked and found to be functioning satisfactorily.

At both DLF Cyber City U-turn Underpasses, 4 pumps of 16 HP capacity along with 1 pump of 25 HP capacity were tested and found operational.

At IFFCO Chowk Underpass, 4 pumps of 20 HP capacity were inspected and found to be working satisfactorily.

At Shankar Chowk Underpass, 2 pumps of 16 HP capacity and 2 pumps of 7.5 HP capacity were tested successfully.

At DLF Phase-1 Underpass, 4 pumps of 35 HP capacity were inspected and found fully operational.

The mock drills were conducted in coordination with officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and DLF, according to their respective jurisdictions.

GMDA said the coordination is meant to ensure better preparedness and effective response mechanisms during the monsoon season.

Officials said such exercises are being carried out proactively at vulnerable locations across the city to strengthen flood management systems and minimise the risk of waterlogging during intense rainfall.

GMDA also said similar mock drills will be conducted in the coming days at Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Medanta Road, Atul Kataria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, Genpact Underpass, Subhash Chowk, Dhanwapur Underpass, Sector-110/113 Underpass, Sector-109/110 Underpass, Sector-102/104 Underpass and Sector-84/36B Underpass.

The wider exercise is part of the city-wide monsoon preparedness plan for Gurugram.
