The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has achieved a key operational milestone with the successful electric locomotive trial at the Varnama CONCOR siding, following the completion of electrification works.

The trial was conducted on Saturday, 7 February.

The Varnama siding holds strategic importance on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), serving as a critical interface between high-capacity freight rail infrastructure and containerised logistics operations across western India.

Located within one of Gujarat’s major industrial belts, the siding is expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity between the WDFC mainline and Container Corporation of India’s container handling facilities.

With electrification now complete and the infrastructure ready for operations, container traffic can move directly onto the Dedicated Freight Corridor without relying on mixed-traffic railway routes.

The shift is expected to streamline freight movement by reducing transit delays and improving overall logistics efficiency, while reinforcing the role of the WDFC in supporting faster, high-capacity cargo transport for industrial regions.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha last week, the Ministry of Railways stated that the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor from Dadri to Vaitarna, covering 1,404 Km, has been commissioned.

The ministry added that construction of the Vaitarna-JNPT section of the WDFC, spanning 102 Km, is at an advanced stage.

Meanwhile, construction of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, covering 1,337 Km, has been completed.
