Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has completed the casting of the final U-girder for Phase 2 Corridor 5, marking the completion of a major precast production programme involving 824 U-girders for the 13.1 Km elevated section of the corridor.
In a statement on Friday, 5 June, CMRL said the final 19.5-metre-long U-girder for Adambakkam Metro Station was cast at the C5 ECV-02 casting yard in collaboration with general consultant AEON and contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
The completion of the final girder marks the conclusion of one of the largest U-girder production programmes undertaken for Chennai Metro projects.
“Spanning over 43 acres, the C5 ECV-02 Casting Yard has stood as one of the most productive and dynamic precast facilities under the CMRL Phase 2 project,” the metro operator said.

CMRL said the project involves casting 5,836 precast elements using around 1.2 lakh cubic metres of concrete and weighing nearly 3 lakh metric tonnes.
The components produced include 302 pier caps, 1,465 pier arms, 824 U-girders, 2,055 I-girders, 194 T-girders, 68 portal U-shells and 1,079 parapets.
All precast elements are transported from the casting yard to construction sites located around 18 Km away along the project alignment.
According to CMRL, the project also implemented automated station U-girder mould operations integrated with hydraulic systems, which it described as the first such implementation in India for U-girder precasting.
The system automates key production processes to improve safety, quality and efficiency while reducing labour dependency and cycle times.
The casting programme covered U-girders ranging from 8.9 metres in length to 33.3 metres.
“The casting was carried out successfully without any operational issues, setting a new benchmark in metro rail infrastructure construction,” the CMRL said.
