The Chennai Metro Phase II project has recorded 47 per cent construction progress, according to official data. The project, being implemented by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), covers a total length of 118.9 km across three corridors and has an estimated cost of Rs 63,246 crore. An expenditure of Rs 29,336 crore has been reported so far.

As per the monthly project monitoring flash report released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) for the month of November, construction activity under Phase II is progressing steadily across multiple sections.

Chennai Metro Rail Phase II comprises three corridors.

Corridor 3 (Purple Line) runs from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri SIPCOT and spans 45.8 km.

Corridor 4 (Yellow Line) connects Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass with a total length of 26.1 km.

Corridor 5 (Red Line) extends from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur, covering 47.0 km.

The Phase II network includes a mix of elevated (76.30 km) and underground (42.60 km) sections. The project is designed to expand metro connectivity to north Chennai, central business districts, IT corridors, and rapidly growing suburban areas.

The project is being implemented as a joint initiative of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu, with financial assistance from international lending agencies. Upon completion, Chennai Metro Phase II is expected to significantly strengthen the city’s urban transport infrastructure and reduce dependence on road-based travel.
