New Delhi, October 25, 2026: Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district has received railway connectivity for the first time since Independence, according to the Ministry of Railways, following the inauguration of two railway sections covering a combined 118 km at a cost of approximately ₹1,943 crore. The new Satna–Devendranagar and Rewa–Churhat lines are expected to improve passenger travel and freight transport across the Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the sections on October 24. A new Devendranagar–Churhat–Devendranagar passenger train was also flagged off, providing a rail travel option through Satna and Rewa.
Vaishnaw participated virtually from New Delhi, while inauguration ceremonies were held at Churhat and Nagod railway stations in Madhya Pradesh.
The 65-km Rewa–Churhat railway line was constructed at a cost of approximately ₹1,070 crore. The project was completed following the construction of the final 22.5-km section between Rampur Naikin and Churhat.
The route also includes a 3.33-km tunnel through hilly terrain, reflecting the engineering challenges involved in extending railway connectivity to the region.
The new connection is expected to make travel easier for residents of Sidhi district, particularly students, patients, workers and traders travelling to educational institutions, hospitals and commercial centres.
The second project, the 53-km Satna–Devendranagar railway line, was constructed at a cost of approximately ₹873 crore. Its completion followed the construction of the final 8-km section between Phulwari and Devendranagar.
Both routes form part of the larger 541-km Lalitpur–Singrauli Railway Project, which aims to improve connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Although the newly inaugurated sections are complete, the wider railway project remains under development.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the Rewa–Churhat line could support the transport of limestone and other minerals while improving connectivity for cement-related industries in the region.
Similarly, the Satna–Devendranagar section is expected to facilitate the movement of cement, clinker and other goods from the industrial areas around Satna.
Improved railway access could also help farmers and rural traders in Devendranagar, Nagod and surrounding areas transport agricultural produce and other goods to larger markets.
The newly launched passenger service is intended to benefit daily commuters and residents travelling for education, healthcare and business. However, the ministry’s announcement does not provide a detailed timetable, fares or service frequency.
Speaking at the inauguration, Vaishnaw said railway projects worth approximately ₹1 lakh crore were underway across Madhya Pradesh, including new lines, track doubling, additional lines and gauge conversion.
He also highlighted the potential for more than 100 long-distance trains and 50–60 short-distance services, including MEMU and Intercity trains, in the coming years. These figures represent future possibilities rather than confirmed new services.
The minister said approximately 80 railway stations in the state had been included in redevelopment plans, including those at Khajuraho, Ashoknagar, Balaghat, Narmadapuram, Chhatarpur and Orchha.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the new railway connections would improve access to markets, education and healthcare while supporting economic activity in the Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions.
The inauguration marks the completion of two sections of the Lalitpur–Singrauli project and the launch of a passenger service, bringing Sidhi district onto the railway network. The extent of future benefits for local industries, farmers and travellers will depend on the development of services and the use of the new infrastructure.
