Mumbai, October 28, 2026: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured two major orders to install track, power supply, signalling and passenger safety systems for Dhaka Metro Line 1 in Bangladesh. The contracts fall within L&T’s ₹5,000–10,000 crore Major order category and cover essential operating systems for the approximately 31-km metro network, which will have 19 stations.

The company announced the orders on October 27 through its Transportation Infrastructure business. The contracts were awarded by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) under the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line 1), which includes Bangladesh’s first underground metro corridor.

L&T has not disclosed the exact combined value of the two contracts or the amount attributable to each package. The ₹5,000–10,000 crore range represents the company’s order classification rather than a separately disclosed contract value.

The orders cover Contract Package CP09 for track works and electrical systems, and Contract Package CP10 for signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors.

Under CP09, L&T will work with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation to design, procure, install, test and commission the track infrastructure and associated electrical systems.

The package includes power supply and distribution facilities, traction substations, overhead catenary systems and related electrical equipment required for metro operations.

Traction substations supply electricity to trains, while overhead catenary systems deliver power to electric rolling stock. Together with the track infrastructure, these systems will support train movements across the corridor.

Under CP10, L&T will execute the signalling, telecommunications and platform screen door systems for the entire metro network.

The signalling systems will help control train movements, while telecommunications infrastructure will support operational communications. Platform screen doors are designed to separate passengers from the tracks and open in coordination with train doors at stations.

Dhaka Metro Line 1 will comprise two routes: the Airport Route, connecting Kamalapur with the airport, and the Purbachal Route, running from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal.

The project will include an underground Airport Route and an elevated Purbachal section, rather than an entirely underground 31-km network. It will also feature a depot at Pitalganj.

The metro project is being financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is intended to expand public transport connectivity across Dhaka, including links to the airport and the developing Purbachal area.

The two orders cover the railway systems required to operate the metro network, rather than the construction of the entire line, its tunnels or station structures.

The latest awards follow L&T’s earlier involvement in Dhaka Metro Line 6, Bangladesh’s first operational metro rail corridor, for which the company delivered an integrated railway systems package.

Ramkumar S, Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, said the repeat orders from DMTCL reflected the company’s experience in delivering integrated urban transit projects.

He cited the company’s previous work on Dhaka Metro Line 6 and its involvement in the Jakarta Metro project as relevant experience for executing the new assignments.

The contracts will require coordination between track, electrical, signalling and telecommunications systems, as well as integration with other components of the metro network.

L&T has not announced separate execution timelines for CP09 and CP10 or specified when Dhaka Metro Line 1 is expected to begin passenger operations.

The awards expand L&T’s international metro project portfolio, giving the company responsibility for key operating and passenger safety systems on Bangladesh’s first metro project incorporating an underground corridor.
