New Delhi: Road users travelling through a densely populated urban stretch of Ahmedabad are set to get relief from delays at a railway level crossing, with Indian Railways approving a new grade-separated road link aimed at improving safety and traffic movement.
Indian Railways on August 12 approved the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Level Crossing No. 305 on the Geratpur-Ahmedabad section of Western Railway in Gujarat at a sanctioned cost of ₹153 crore.
The project has been sanctioned under Western Railway’s ongoing umbrella work covering construction of road over bridges, road under bridges and foot over bridges, along with drainage improvement and rebuilding of existing road over and under bridges.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the level crossing is located in a densely populated urban area. The surrounding development requires longer approaches and a larger bridge structure for the proposed four-lane ROB.
The railway bridge portion of the project will have a total length of 106 metres and comprise two composite girders, each measuring 53 metres.
A 150-metre viaduct will follow the railway bridge portion, while the railway approach will extend for 595 metres.
Once completed, the ROB will eliminate the need for road users to stop and wait at Level Crossing No. 305 while trains pass through the Geratpur-Ahmedabad section.
The grade-separated crossing will allow vehicles to move across the railway line without being interrupted by closure of the existing level crossing.
The approval is part of Indian Railways’ continuing efforts to eliminate level crossings and improve public safety.
Western Railway’s umbrella work also covers foot over bridges, drainage improvement and rebuilding of existing road over and under bridges.
