The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has commissioned a new treated water hydrant in Sector 29, expanding the city’s treated wastewater reuse network and enabling fire tenders to use non-potable water for firefighting operations.

According to a statement by the GMDA on Friday, 3 July, the hydrant has been connected to GMDA’s treated wastewater pipeline network.

The move is aimed at reducing the use of potable water for non-drinking purposes while increasing the reuse of treated wastewater across Gurugram.

The treated water pipeline already laid in the Sector 29 area is supplying water for horticulture and irrigation at Maharana Pratap Swarn Jayanti Park, also known as Leisure Valley Park.

With the new hydrant becoming operational, the same network will now support filling of fire tenders.

GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena said the authority is committed to utilisation of treated wastewater generated from its Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) by making it readily available for various non-potable applications.

He said that the use of treated water for firefighting, irrigation, construction activities and industrial purposes would help save an equivalent quantity of potable water.

Besides conserving precious freshwater resources, it also reduces dependence on groundwater.

According to GMDA CEO, the authority is currently treating about 243 million litres per day of wastewater through its sewage treatment plants.

Of this, nearly 188 MLD of treated water is being utilised across Gurugram for horticulture, irrigation, industrial use, construction activities and other municipal purposes.

To expand treated water distribution, GMDA has developed an approximately 86-kilometre treated wastewater pipeline network across Sectors 1 to 80. Another 19 kilometres of pipeline is under construction.

The authority has also installed treated water hydrants at key locations for use by government departments and public agencies.

These include STP Behrampur, Southern Peripheral Road near Sector 66, Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 38, Tau Devi Lal Biodiversity Park in Sector 52, in front of Unitech Cyber Park in Sector 45, and now Sector 29.

Meena said GMDA is working towards achieving 100 per cent utilisation of treated wastewater.

Alongside enhancing treatment capacity, the authority is continuously expanding its treated water distribution network to ensure that every drop of treated water is put to productive use.

These efforts will further strengthen sustainable urban water management in Gurugram while maximising the conservation of potable water, the authority said.
