Indian Railways freight rises 4% in June as passenger traffic reaches 63.81 crore

Indian Railways loaded 142.21 million tonnes of freight in June 2026, compared with 136.71 million tonnes in June 2025, registering a 4% year-on-year increase.

In a statement on Wednesday, 2 July, the Ministry of Railways said freight earnings also rose during the month, generating additional revenue of about ₹430 crore, a 3% increase over June 2025.

Fertiliser loading recorded the highest growth among major commodity segments, rising 19.1% in June 2026.

Balance Other Goods increased 17.3%, iron ore loading rose 9.4%, domestic coal grew 4.9%, total coal increased 3.6%, and clinker loading rose 7.2%.

The ministry said Indian Railways stepped up domestic coal transportation to thermal power stations during the extended summer season.

Coal supply to power plants increased 7% in June 2026 compared with the corresponding month last year.

During the first quarter of FY 2026-27, Indian Railways loaded 419.08 million tonnes of freight, compared with 413.05 million tonnes in the same period of FY 2025-26.

For the April-June quarter, iron ore loading grew 7.44%, clinker loading rose 6.54%, and Balance and Other Goods increased 12.16% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

Passenger traffic also increased in June 2026.

Indian Railways carried 63.81 crore passengers during the month, compared with 62.37 crore passengers in June 2025.

The non-suburban segment, covering short and long-distance travel, grew 3.9%, with passenger numbers rising from 28.90 crore to 30.04 crore.

The suburban segment recorded 0.9% growth, with passenger numbers increasing from 33.46 crore to 33.77 crore.
