India has started looking beyond its first indigenous bullet train even before the B28 enters service, with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) beginning a capability assessment for a next-generation high-speed train platform capable of touching 350 kmph.
NHSRCL, the implementation agency for the bullet train corridor in India, has invited leading rolling stock manufacturers to present their capability for developing the High Speed Train B35 for upcoming high-speed rail corridors across the country.
The move marks the next stage in India’s effort to build a domestic high-speed rail ecosystem instead of depending only on imported trainsets and technology.
India is already working on the B28 trainset, a 280 kmph design-speed train being developed by Integral Coach Factory and BEML.
The B28 is expected to be used on the first operational stretch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor between Surat and Vapi, targeted for 2027.
The proposed B35 would be a major step up from that platform.
While B28 is being developed with a design speed of 280 kmph, the B35 assessment is aimed at trains capable of reaching a maximum speed of 350 kmph, placing it closer to global high-speed rail standards.
According to the NHSRCL notice, manufacturers will be assessed on their ability to design and manufacture key systems needed for high-speed operations, including propulsion, vehicle electronics, Train Control and Management System, and mechanical systems.

The assessment will also look at existing manufacturing experience, quality control systems, certifications, manpower strength, compliance with national security regulations and plans to manufacture trains in India.
A key part of the exercise is whether manufacturers can build trains suited to Indian climatic conditions.
This is important because India’s high-speed rail network will have to operate across heat, humidity, dust, heavy rain and varied terrain.
The presentations are scheduled for 17 and 18 July 2026 at NHSRCL’s office in World Trade Centre, Nauroji Nagar, New Delhi.
Rolling stock manufacturers have been asked to confirm participation by 10 July.
NHSRCL has clarified that the process is only for information and market assessment and does not amount to a commitment to award any contract.
