The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has started construction work at the Central Secretariat Metro Station for the Central Vista corridor, a project that will add a new underground link through the heart of New Delhi’s administrative district.

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the work began on Wednesday, 24 June, at Central Secretariat station.

The station is being developed under Phase V(A) and will form part of the extension of the existing Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg.

Once completed, Central Secretariat will become a triple interchange station. The upcoming Magenta Line station will connect with the existing Yellow Line and Violet Line at the same hub, making it one of the most important interchange points in the Delhi Metro network.

The project is expected to improve access to Lutyens’ Delhi, where several government offices, judicial institutions, national memorials and convention facilities are located. The ministry said the new connectivity will particularly help government employees and regular commuters travelling to the Central Vista and nearby administrative areas.

The corridor will cover 9.913 km and will have nine underground stations. These include Shivaji Stadium, Yuge Yugeen Bharat, Central Secretariat, Kartavya Bhawan, India Gate, War Memorial-High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam and Indraprastha.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, along with senior officials of the ministry and DMRC, was present during the commencement of work.

The Central Vista corridor is significant because it links some of Delhi’s busiest institutional and public zones with the Metro network. With stations planned near India Gate, Bharat Mandapam, Kartavya Bhawan and other key locations, the line is expected to reduce dependence on road transport in a high-security and high-footfall part of the capital.

For Delhi Metro, the project also adds another layer to the network’s interchange system.

Central Secretariat already serves as a major connection point between the Yellow and Violet lines.

The addition of the Magenta Line will increase passenger movement through the station and offer more route options for commuters travelling between west, central and east Delhi.
