Indian Railways has successfully constructed and commissioned a waterproof pedestrian subway near Bhiwandi Road station on the Panvel-Vasai Road section, marking an important infrastructure upgrade for safer public movement across railway tracks.
The subway has been built beneath seven operational railway lines without affecting train operations during execution.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the work was carried out under challenging conditions and required careful planning because trains continued to move on the section while construction was underway.
The project used advanced hydraulic pushing technology to install four large precast reinforced concrete segments beneath the live railway tracks.
This method allowed the subway structure to be placed safely under the tracks without disrupting railway traffic.
A major feature of the subway is its waterproof design.
Specialised waterproofing measures, including multiple sealing layers and protective membranes, have been provided to prevent water seepage and ensure long-term durability.
The structure has also been designed to withstand heavy freight traffic.
It meets loading requirements including Dedicated Freight Corridor standards, making the subway suitable for a busy rail section that handles both passenger and freight movement.
The subway will provide a safe and convenient all-weather crossing facility for pedestrians and two-wheelers in the Bhiwandi area.
It has been equipped with covered approaches, adequate lighting, ventilation and proper drainage arrangements to improve safety and comfort for users.
The project is expected to reduce unsafe trespassing across railway tracks, which has been a major safety concern in busy railway areas.
By offering a dedicated crossing facility, the subway will help improve local connectivity while supporting safer railway operations.
