Mumbai Metro Line 5, one of the major metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is set to expand from 22.38 Km to about 34.21 Km after the Maharashtra government approved Metro Line 5A and the Line 5 extension, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said on Sunday, 31 May.
The approved Line 5A and Line 5 extension component will add 11.83 Km to the corridor and bring 7 new elevated stations to the Kalyan-Ulhasnagar belt.
The project is expected to improve connectivity between Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, while also strengthening access to key residential, industrial, warehousing and textile hubs in the region.
Metro Line 5 currently forms an important east-west connectivity link in the wider Maha Mumbai Metro network.
With Metro Line 5A and the Line 5 extension, the corridor’s total length will increase to about 34.21 Km.
The first phase of the corridor, between Balkum and Dhamankar Naka, covers 11.9 Km and includes 6 stations.
MMRDA said work on this stretch is moving towards final safety inspection, paving the way for the corridor’s first operational section to open soon.
The extended corridor will also offer interchange connectivity with Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 12, improving network integration across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The development is expected to reduce travel time by 40% to 50%, besides easing road congestion and improving regional mobility across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar.
The corridor is also expected to support economic activity in the region by improving faster access to major employment and logistics zones.
MMRDA said Metro Line 5 is taking shape as a key mobility backbone for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, supporting faster and easier travel across the region under its “Mumbai In Minutes” push.
