Mizoram to cut AT&C losses to 25% by March 2027, complete smart meter installation by June 2027

Mizoram has committed to reducing Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses to 25 per cent by March 2027, while the state informed the Centre that smart meter installation across Mizoram will be completed by June 2027, the Ministry of Power said in a statement on Friday, 29 May, after a review meeting chaired by Union Minister Manohar Lal in Aizawl.

Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal visited Aizawl on 29 May and chaired a review meeting on Mizoram’s power sector and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) with the state government.

The meeting was attended by Mizoram Urban Development Minister K Sapdanga, Power and Electricity Minister F Rodingliana, and senior officials from the concerned state departments and the Government of India.

During the review, the Union Minister discussed the overall power sector scenario in Mizoram, including reforms and progress under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

He emphasised the need to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses and improve billing and collection efficiency.

He also highlighted the need for timely clearance of government department dues and subsidy payments.

The state committed to achieving 25 per cent AT&C losses by March 2027, according to the Ministry of Power.

The review also focused on smart meter installation in Mizoram, particularly prepaid conversion for government, commercial, industrial and high-load consumers above 10 kW.

The state informed the Centre that smart meter installation would be completed across Mizoram by June 2027, the ministry said.

Progress under PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was also reviewed.

The state was urged to accelerate beneficiary registration and installation targets under both schemes.

Manohar Lal also reviewed resource adequacy and intra-state transmission planning in Mizoram to meet growing electricity demand.

He said sincere efforts would help make the electricity department financially viable and the state power sector self-sufficient.

The Union Minister assured continued support and cooperation from the Government of India for the overall development of Mizoram.

Mizoram Power and Electricity Minister F Rodingliana gave an overview of the state’s power sector and highlighted challenges including difficult terrain and limited grid connectivity in remote areas.

He assured that necessary measures would be taken for speedy implementation of works sanctioned for Mizoram under RDSS and for improving the financial performance of the state utility.
