A 14.9 Km four-lane bypass will be built around Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu, with the Centre approving ₹1,427.61 crore for the project on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of National Highway-83.

The project will also include construction of two additional road over bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A, according to a statement by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday, 26 May.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the project has been approved in Tamil Nadu and is expected to strengthen connectivity between industrial hubs such as Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore and the port towns of Karaikal and Nagapattinam.

The proposed bypass will start from the Adiyakkamangalam-Thandalai stretch and pass through locations including Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi and Anaivadapathy Colony, among others.

Once completed, the bypass is expected to divert through-traffic away from Thiruvarur town, reducing congestion in densely populated and commercial areas.

The ministry said the project is expected to reduce travel time by about 15 minutes and improve road safety.

The alignment is also expected to improve connectivity to SH-23 and SH-65, apart from easing access to the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, an important religious site in Thiruvarur.

The Nagapattinam-Thanjavur corridor is important for both regional travel and freight movement in central Tamil Nadu.
