Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL) delivered Mahendragiri, the sixth Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth frigate, to the Indian Navy on 30 April 2026 in Mumbai.
Mahendragiri is the fourth Project 17A vessel constructed at MDSL and follows the delivery of the lead ship Nilgiri in December 2024.
The sixth delivery within a span of less than 17 months highlights faster execution timelines in indigenous warship construction.
Project 17A frigates are multi-mission platforms designed to address evolving maritime challenges. Compared to the earlier Shivalik-class (Project 17), these ships incorporate improvements in stealth features, combat capability, automation and survivability.

The ship has been designed by the Warship Design Bureau and constructed under an integrated build approach.
It is equipped with advanced weapon and sensor systems capable of anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare operations.
Mahendragiri is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, comprising diesel engines and gas turbines driving controllable pitch propellers.
The vessel also features an Integrated Platform Management System for efficient onboard control and monitoring.
The Project 17A programme has achieved about 75 per cent indigenous content and involved more than 200 MSMEs. It has generated employment for around 4,000 personnel directly and over 10,000 indirectly.
The delivery of Mahendragiri reflects continued progress in India’s domestic warship design and shipbuilding capabilities, with a focus on self-reliance in the naval sector.
