Government-backed Bharat Taxi has expanded its operations to Mumbai with the launch of a driver onboarding initiative aimed at strengthening organised urban mobility and improving driver livelihoods.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal inaugurated the initiative on Thursday, 23 April, at Kamla Vihar Sports Club in Kandivali West, where hundreds of auto-rickshaw and cab drivers, transport union representatives and cooperative association members participated.

The initiative is designed to bring drivers onto structured digital platforms, enabling greater participation, improved transparency and more stable earning opportunities.

It also focuses on enhancing driver welfare through technology-driven systems.

Addressing the gathering, Goyal highlighted the role of cooperative and technology-led models in shaping India’s mobility ecosystem.

He stated that platforms like Bharat Taxi allow drivers to function as partners while benefiting from digital tools that support better income visibility and dignity of labour.

The onboarding drive is part of broader efforts to build driver-first mobility systems across major cities.

By simplifying onboarding, improving operational efficiency and ensuring consistent access to ride demand, the platform aims to create a more sustainable and inclusive ecosystem for both drivers and commuters.

With the Mumbai rollout, Bharat Taxi is now present in multiple cities including Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh and Lucknow, indicating a steady expansion of organised mobility networks.

According to operational data shared in the Commerce ministry release, the platform currently has over 5.17 lakh drivers, more than 50 lakh customers and facilitates nearly 10 lakh rides every month across cities.

Bharat Taxi COO Vivek Pandey said Mumbai represents a high-potential market and added that strong support from local driver unions has reinforced confidence in the platform’s expansion strategy in the city.

According to the ministry, the expansion aligns with the broader vision of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah to scale Bharat Taxi operations across major Indian cities over the next three years, with Mumbai emerging as a key milestone in the national rollout plan.
