The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has constituted a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) to provide specialised advisory support to India’s evolving artificial intelligence governance framework, according to a press release issued on 18 April.

The newly formed TPEC will function as a standing expert body to assist the recently constituted AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG) by offering technical, policy and strategic inputs.

The committee will support informed decision-making on policy design, regulatory measures and India’s engagement in global AI governance discussions.

Chaired by the Secretary of MeitY, the committee brings together experts from academia, the technology industry and digital policy domains.

It has been tasked with ensuring that governance decisions are guided by a nuanced understanding of technological developments, regulatory frameworks and international best practices, while remaining aligned with India’s social, economic and strategic priorities.

Under the newly established AI governance architecture, the AIGEG will be responsible for setting strategic direction and coordinating policy across government bodies.

The TPEC, in turn, will act as a subject matter advisory group, translating complex technical and policy issues into actionable insights for governance decisions.

The institutional framework aims to create a dynamic and adaptive approach to AI governance, ensuring coherence between strategic priorities, regulatory frameworks and technological advancements as India strengthens its position in the global AI ecosystem.
