Commercial semiconductor memory shipments begin at Micron Sanand plant

India has entered commercial semiconductor memory assembly with Micron Technology beginning production at its Sanand facility and delivering the first shipment of made-in-India memory modules to Dell Technologies for laptops manufactured within the country.

The milestone marks India’s transition from a semiconductor importer to a location where memory chips are commercially assembled and integrated into finished electronics.

The Sanand facility is expected to assemble and test tens of millions of semiconductor chips in 2026, marking the first year of full-scale commercial operations.

Output is planned to expand rapidly, with production projected to reach hundreds of millions of chips annually from 2027, significantly increasing India’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

The plant converts advanced DRAM and NAND wafers sourced from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products.

Once fully ramped in its first phase, the site will feature more than 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the world’s largest single-floor semiconductor assembly and test cleanrooms.

The Sanand operation represents a combined investment of approximately $2.75 billion by Micron and government partners.

The facility has been built to international manufacturing and environmental standards, including ISO 9001:2015 certification, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold standards, and advanced water-saving systems enabling zero liquid discharge.

Micron is also supporting semiconductor workforce development in India through partnerships with universities, technical institutions, and government-supported training programmes aimed at preparing talent for advanced manufacturing roles.

The expansion strengthens India’s position within Micron’s global semiconductor manufacturing network and supports rising worldwide demand for memory and storage products driven by artificial intelligence, data centres, and advanced computing applications.
