The Ahmedabad-Dholera Greenfield Expressway has entered a public trial phase, with motorists now permitted to use the corridor while authorities carry out final operational evaluations ahead of formal commissioning.
Developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana at a cost of ₹5,800 crore, the 109.019 Km expressway links Ahmedabad with the Dholera Special Investment Region and onward to Bhavnagar district.
The route is expected to serve as a key connectivity backbone for the emerging industrial and aviation hub around Dholera, including the upcoming international airport.
“At present, the expressway has been opened to the public for testing purposes, allowing commuters to experience faster and smoother travel while final operational readiness is assessed,” the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement on Friday, 27 January.
The new alignment is already delivering substantial travel time savings for commuters using the corridor.
The distance between Ahmedabad and Dholera has been reduced to about 83 Km, bringing travel time down to roughly 45 minutes compared with over two hours earlier.
Similarly, the Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar journey has been shortened from more than three hours to around one hour and 45 minutes.
The access-controlled expressway has been built with provisions for future expansion, including a 30-metre median designed to accommodate widening up to eight lanes.
Supporting infrastructure includes 11 interchanges, 14 flyovers, 86 underpasses and 224 culverts, along with designated wayside amenities and a closed toll collection system.
The corridor is expected to play a strategic role in supporting industrial growth and logistics movement to Dholera, which is being developed as a major manufacturing and investment destination.
