In a key push to maintain momentum on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road GMLR corridor, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC has accelerated work on both the elevated and underground sections of the project, with a firm deadline set for the flyover between Dindoshi Court and Dadasaheb Phalke Film City to be opened to traffic by 31 May 2026.

The 12.2 km GMLR corridor, which is being built by the BMC, will include underground tunnels, bridges, and key traffic interchanges to link Goregaon in the west with Mulund in the east.

During a site inspection on 18 February, Additional Municipal Commissioner Projects Abhijit Bangar directed officials to deploy adequate manpower and machinery to ensure the flyover is completed before the monsoon.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Infrastructure Girish Nikam, Executive Engineer Bridges Naresh Meghrajani, along with municipal engineers and consultants, were present during the review visit.

The structure forms a crucial component of the larger GMLR corridor, which aims to ease congestion between Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs.

Twin Tunnel Works Enter Critical Phase

Parallel to the flyover construction, excavation for the launching shaft of the project’s twin tunnels has progressed in the Film City area of Goregaon.

The initial phase of excavation has been completed, and work has begun on the cradle required to launch the Tunnel Boring Machine TBM.

Two TBMs will be deployed for the underground stretch. The process of lowering the first TBM into the shaft is scheduled to begin in March 2026, with preparatory works targeted for completion by 10 March 2026.

For the TBM launch operation, cranes with lifting capacities of 800 metric tonnes and 350 metric tonnes are required.

The 350 metric tonne crane has already arrived at the site, while the 800 metric tonne crane is expected by the last week of February, a key milestone before mechanical lowering operations begin.

Strategic East-West Connector

Once completed, the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the western and eastern suburbs, offering faster and safer connectivity across the city.

The project integrates flyovers, elevated sections and underground tunnels, positioning it as a transformative corridor for Mumbai’s long-term traffic management.
