Mumbai plans 70 Km integrated tunnel grid connecting Coastal Road, airport and bullet train terminal, The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has outlined an ambitious plan to build a citywide network of underground roads aimed at easing traffic congestion and transforming urban mobility across Mumbai.

According to the authority, excavation work has already begun on the Orange Gate-Marine Drive urban tunnel, while construction of the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project is progressing at full pace.

These projects form part of a broader push to create grade-separated corridors that can reduce travel delays and improve connectivity between key urban nodes.

“Excavation for the Orange Gate-Marine Drive urban tunnel has started, while work on the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project is progressing at full speed,” the MMRDA said in a statement.

MMRDA is also preparing a plan for a 70 Km integrated underground network that will connect the Mumbai Coastal Road, the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) bullet train terminal, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 2.

The network is expected to expand further in the future to link the Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway, and a proposed north-south urban connectivity corridor.

For financial year 2027, the authority has earmarked Rs 5,543.51 crore toward the development of underground road infrastructure.

The Thane-Borivali twin tunnel accounts for the largest share with an allocation of Rs 3,029.51 crore.

The Orange Gate-Marine Drive urban tunnel has been assigned Rs 1,250 crore, while Rs 1,189 crore has been set aside for the Mumbai Integrated Tunnel Road Network.

An additional Rs 75 crore has been allocated for the Gaimukh-Fountain Hotel tunnel project.
