Indian Railways has introduced the air brake coach rake, the first rake of Narrow Gauge coaches equipped with an indigenously developed air brake system on the Kalka-Shimla UNESCO World Heritage Railway, marking a significant step toward modernising heritage rail travel.
The upgraded rake commenced its inaugural journey on 13 February 2026, operating as Train No. 52453 Kalka-Shimla Express.
The train features a 7-coach composition comprising 14 units and was hauled by Loco No. 714 ZDM3D, departing Kalka station on schedule at 6.20 AM.
The transition from the traditional braking mechanism to the modern air brake system represents a technical milestone for the Kalka Workshop, where the conversion was carried out.
The air brake system was designed and integrated locally, reflecting Indian Railways’ commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat.
According to a statement by the Northern Railway, the upgraded coaches incorporate modified bogies and trolleys to meet stringent safety standards required for the steep gradients and sharp curves of the Himalayan terrain.
The new system will also deliver superior braking controllability and operational efficiency compared with the older vacuum brake system.
Before being cleared for passenger service, the coaches underwent an extensive evaluation process that included oscillation trials, Emergency Braking Distance tests, and controllability trials conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation.
They also received statutory validation from the Commissioner of Railway Safety, followed by final operational approval from the General Manager.
Commenting on the development, Northern Railways General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma said, “The introduction of air brake coaches reflects our dual commitment to preserving the heritage of the Kalka-Shimla line while ensuring that our passengers benefit from modern safety standards and cost-effective technological advancements.”
The modernization initiative aims to ensure that the century-old charm of the Kalka-Shimla Railway is supported by contemporary engineering, enabling a safer and smoother travel experience for tourists from across the globe.
