India’s metro network crosses 1,095.66 Km; 957.06 Km under construction across major cities

India has more than 1,095.66 Km of operational metro rail network and an additional 957.06 Km under construction across the country, according to data provided by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

The update was shared by the minister in response to a question on the status of metro rail projects nationwide.

According to the data provided by the minister, the Delhi-NCR region continues to host the largest metro system in India, with 395.81 Km operational and 157.75 Km under construction.

The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor contributes 55 Km of operational length and 27.15 Km currently under development.

Among other major urban networks, Bengaluru operates 96.1 Km while 121.13 Km is under construction.

Mumbai has 110.6 Km operational and 141.4 Km being built, reflecting one of the strongest expansion pipelines in the country.

Kolkata currently runs 72.98 Km with another 60.26 Km under execution, while Chennai operates 54.24 Km and is expanding rapidly with 118.9 Km under construction.

Hyderabad has 69 Km operational with no additional stretch presently listed under construction.

Jaipur operates 12.1 Km, Kochi 28.48 Km with 11.2 Km underway, and Lucknow runs 22.87 Km alongside 11.16 Km being developed.

Several tier-two cities are also witnessing accelerated metro development.

Kanpur has 15.12 Km operational and 17.25 Km under construction, while Agra operates 6 Km with 24.1 Km underway.

Pune runs 33.23 Km and is building 77.51 Km, whereas Nagpur operates 40.02 Km with 43.8 Km under construction.

In Gujarat, Ahmedabad operates 68.25 Km, while Surat currently has no operational stretch but 40.35 Km under construction. Gandhi Nagar is also part of the expanding network.

Metro expansion is gaining momentum in central India as well, with Bhopal operating 6.94 Km and constructing 20.92 Km, while Indore runs 6.2 Km with 25.35 Km underway.

Patna has 2.7 Km operational and 29.80 Km under construction.

The minister noted that most metro rail projects are being implemented through Joint Venture Special Purpose Vehicles with representation from both Central and State governments.

Project progress is monitored by SPV boards and reviewed under central mechanisms such as PRAGATI and the Project Monitoring Group to ensure timely execution.

A High Powered Committee chaired by the Chief Secretary of the concerned state reviews metro projects to expedite decisions and facilitate completion.
