Chennai Metro Asset Management Limited (CMAML) has initiated a feasibility study for the development of a high-altitude cable-propelled ropeway transport system in Udhagamandalam, following the signing of a consultancy contract for preparation of a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR).
CMAML, a joint venture of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), has been assigned the task of preparing the DFR for High-Altitude Cable Propelled (Ropeway) Transport Systems in Udhagamandalam town.
According to the official statement by CMRL, the initiative is aimed at “enhancing transit infrastructure in high-altitude regions while promoting sustainable mobility solutions in ecologically sensitive and tourism-centric destinations.”
The proposed system is expected to “provide safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport options,” while also “boosting tourism and improving accessibility in these regions.”
For the assignment, CMAML has appointed Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (IDEC), Bengaluru, in joint venture with Outdoor Engineers AG, Switzerland, as the consultant.
The contract value for the study is Rs 96,6,3,011 excluding GST.
The consultancy agreement was signed in the presence of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CMAML and was executed by a Director of CMAML along with representatives of IDEC and Outdoor Engineers. Senior officials of CMRL were also present at the signing.
As per the statement, the consultant will “comprehensively assess technical feasibility, alignment options, and ridership potential, environmental and social impacts along with Udhagamandalam town traffic management improvement proposals.”
The study will form “the basis for informed decision-making and future project implementation”, the CMRL said.
The duration of the DFR study has been fixed at 120 days.
