The Union Budget 2026-27 proposes seven high-speed rail corridors to promote environmentally sustainable passenger transport between major urban centres.

The corridors identified are Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi, and Varanasi-Siliguri.

Described as “growth connectors,” the corridors are intended to strengthen economic linkages while supporting urban expansion.

The rail push complements the proposed Dedicated Freight Corridor between Dankuni and Surat, aimed at improving cargo movement efficiency.

The Budget also links rail infrastructure with broader urbanisation plans through the development of City Economic Regions (CERs). An allocation of ₹5,000 crore per CER over five years has been proposed under a reform-cum-results-based financing mechanism.

By integrating high-speed passenger routes with freight infrastructure and urban planning, the proposals position railways as a central component of future transport capacity expansion.
