Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday, 8 March, virtually inaugurated the integrated double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk.

Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Minister of State Madhuri Misal, MLA Siddharth Shirole, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure, and other dignitaries were present in Pune during the inauguration.

The flyover, developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is an integrated double-decker structure constructed at one of the city’s busiest traffic junctions near Savitribai Phule Pune University on Ganeshkhind Road.

The project spans around 1.7 Km, with a main viaduct of over 1.1 km, and has been built at a cost of approximately ₹277 crore.

The lower deck is designed for vehicular traffic while the upper deck is planned to carry the Pune Metro Line-3 corridor connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar.

In a statement, Fadnavis said the project marks a key milestone in addressing traffic congestion in Pune.

“Driving Pune’s future with modern infrastructure. Inaugurated the integrated double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk from Varsha Bungalow (Online), marking a significant milestone in addressing traffic congestion in Pune,” he said.

Fadnavis also acknowledged the role played by former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in the project.

“Former DCM late Ajitdada Pawar’s vision and initiative played a crucial role in overcoming several challenges and making this important project a reality,” the Maharashtra Chief Minister said.

He congratulated PMRDA for completing the project.

“Congratulations to PMRDA, whose dedication and commitment ensured the successful completion of this landmark infrastructure,” Fadnavis said.

According to the Chief Minister, the flyover is expected to reduce congestion and improve connectivity across key corridors of Pune.

“This flyover will bring much-needed relief to Punekars by easing congestion, improving connectivity, and reducing travel time across key corridors. Such modern infrastructure will make daily commuting smoother while strengthening Pune’s growth as a dynamic and well-planned urban centre, attracting investment and economic activity,” he said.

Fadnavis added that Pune is entering a new phase of urban transformation driven by infrastructure development and economic growth.

“Pune is entering a new phase of transformation. From an IT-driven city, it is now emerging as India’s GCC capital, having created the highest GCC space in the country in the past year. As Pune moves toward next-generation manufacturing and services, strong infrastructure will remain the backbone of its growth,” he said.

The Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk junction connects major traffic corridors including Shivajinagar, Baner, Aundh and Pashan, and is among the busiest intersections in the city.

The new double-decker flyover is expected to help streamline traffic movement in the area while integrating road and metro infrastructure within the same corridor.
