KOLKATA, September 23: The West Bengal government has allotted about 54.20 acres of land to Websol Energy System Limited at Falta Industrial Park for a proposed greenfield solar manufacturing facility, the company said in a regulatory filing.
The facility is planned with 4 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity and 4 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity, to be developed in two phases of 2 GW each.
The land allotment follows Websol’s evaluation of locations near its existing manufacturing operations at the Falta Special Economic Zone in West Bengal. The company said the expansion would allow it to leverage its existing base of skilled manpower, established supplier relationships and familiarity with the local manufacturing ecosystem.
Websol said the proposed facility would create a larger integrated manufacturing base for the company in eastern India as domestic solar manufacturing capacity expands to support the country’s growing renewable energy requirements.
Chairman and Managing Director Sohan Lal Agarwal said the land allotment represented the next phase of Websol’s more than three-decade presence in West Bengal and would allow the company to expand at a significantly larger scale while remaining close to an ecosystem and workforce it knows well.
Executive Director Sanjana Khaitan said the company’s focus would now shift to execution, including construction, commissioning and utilisation, as it works towards its 2028 targets.
Websol currently operates a manufacturing facility at the Falta Special Economic Zone with 1,200 MW of solar cell capacity and 550 MW of module capacity. The facility is designed to process wafers of up to 210 mm and manufactures both solar cells and modules in-house.
The company said it is one of 14 ALMM-approved solar cell manufacturers in India and the only such manufacturer based in eastern India.
Websol disclosed the land allotment to the BSE and National Stock Exchange on September 23 under SEBI listing regulations.
