India To Launch New National Accounts Series With FY23 As Base Year On 27 February

national accounts series preparation using GDP data in India
Officials prepare data ahead of the release of India’s new national accounts series with FY23 as the base year.

India will release a new series of National Accounts Statistics with financial year 2022-23 as the base year on 27 February 2026, marking a key update to the country’s official GDP framework.

The revision is being undertaken by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, which is updating the base year and methodology to reflect structural changes in the economy and incorporate improved data sources for economic measurement.

An Advisory Committee on National Account Statistics (ACNAS), chaired by economist B N Goldar, has been constituted to advise on methodological changes, inclusion of new data sources, and improvements in the compilation and presentation of national accounts. The committee includes representatives from central ministries, state governments, academia, and research institutions.

Ahead of the release, the ministry has issued a series of discussion papers to familiarise users with the proposed changes. Earlier papers covered revisions under the production and income approaches in November 2025 and the expenditure approach in December 2025. The latest discussion paper focuses on changes in the methodology of quarterly GDP estimates and sub-national accounts.

The updated series is expected to provide a more accurate representation of economic activity at both national and state levels, strengthening the analytical basis for policy formulation, fiscal planning, and macroeconomic assessment once released on 27 February.
